Converted to a hotel in 1960, extended and redecorated
in 1972, the Chateau de Creissels has an exciting past full of memories...
The chateau dates back many centuries; a legal decree from 801 mentions
it. In the 12th century, when Creissels was proclaimed a Viscounty, it
belonged to the great families of France. The 1st Viscount of Creissels
was Raimond de Roquefeuil, an ancestor of the very rich Rockefeller.
The Chateau returned to the crown from 1589 (during
the accession of Henry IV) to 1628, at which time the King handed it over
to the people. Since then, this residence has often been handed down to
the women of the families.
Over the centuries, the Chateau has undergone many transformations; however
the salon, library, hotel reception, restaurant dining room (formerly
the Guards Room) and the covered way make up the oldest part of the chateau,
dating back to the 12th century.
The square tower was built in the 19th century
after the fire of 1814 which destroyed two-thirds of the Chateau; the
ramparts were raised to the terraced area, to hide the ruins of the section
destroyed by the fire.
Over the years, the Chateau has welcomed many celebrities, including 2
bishops who, in the 19th century, had rooms at the chateau, their family
residence and whose rooms still exist with period furniture. More recently,
the famous singer-artist Emma Calvé stayed here, leaving behind
some great memories.
